Diesel Generator Selection for Hybrid Microgrids: Key Specifications

Choosing the right diesel generator for a hybrid microgrid is different from sizing for diesel-only operation. In a hybrid, the generator is not the primary power source — it’s the backup and battery charger. This changes the selection criteria significantly.

Why Hybrid Changes Generator Sizing

In diesel-only systems, generators are typically sized for peak load plus 20-30% margin. In hybrid systems, the battery handles peak loads, so the generator can be sized for average load. This often allows a 30-50% smaller generator, reducing capital cost and improving fuel efficiency (larger engines running at low load are inefficient and suffer from wet stacking).

5 Critical Specs for Hybrid-Ready Generators

1. Governor Type: Electronic Isochronous

Mechanical governors cannot respond fast enough for load sharing with inverters. Electronic isochronous governors maintain ±0.25% frequency regulation and communicate with the EMS via CAN bus or Modbus. Essential for seamless transitions between grid-forming (inverter) and grid-following (generator) modes.

2. Block Loading Capability

When the EMS decides to start the generator, it may need to accept a large block load immediately as the inverter hands over. Look for generators rated for 60-70% block load acceptance in a single step (ISO 8528-5 G2 rating minimum).

3. Low-Load Protection

Hybrid generators often run at high load when charging batteries but may idle at low load during battery-only periods. The engine controller should have automatic low-load protection that ramps up load or shuts down if load stays below 30% for extended periods to prevent wet stacking.

4. Remote Start/Stop Interface

The EMS must be able to command generator start/stop based on battery state of charge. A dry-contact or Modbus interface is standard. The generator controller should report: engine speed, coolant temperature, oil pressure, fuel level, output voltage/current/frequency, and running hours — all over Modbus to the EMS.

5. Altitude and Temperature Derating

Generator output drops approximately 1% per 100m above 1000m altitude and 1% per 5.5°C above 25°C ambient. For a mine at 3000m altitude with 40°C ambient, a 500kVA generator effectively becomes a 370kVA unit. Always specify your site conditions when requesting quotations.
