How It Works

Our hybrid microgrid system uses an intelligent Energy Management System (EMS) to coordinate multiple power sources. Solar PV generates clean energy during the day, excess power charges the BESS, and the diesel generator provides backup when renewable sources are insufficient. The EMS optimizes source dispatch to minimize fuel consumption while maintaining 99.9% uptime.

☀️

Solar PV Priority

Solar power is dispatched first. Excess energy charges the battery system.

🔋

BESS Buffer

Battery storage smooths solar fluctuations and provides power during low-generation periods.

Diesel Backup

Diesel generator starts only when solar and battery are depleted, minimizing fuel usage.

Key Benefits

50-70% Fuel Savings

Dramatically reduce diesel fuel consumption and logistics costs.

99.9% Uptime

Triple-redundant power sources ensure continuous operation.

Reduced CO₂ Emissions

Cut carbon emissions by 50%+ compared to diesel-only systems.

Remote Monitoring

Cloud-based EMS with real-time monitoring and predictive maintenance.

Solar + Battery + Diesel: The Complete Hybrid Microgrid

The “all-of-the-above” hybrid microgrid combines three generation sources in one optimized system. Each source plays to its strengths: solar for clean daytime energy, battery for instant response and storage, diesel for bulk power and backup. The result is reliable, low-cost, low-emission power that adapts to weather, load, and economics.

This is the configuration we deploy most often. It works for 90% of off-grid or weak-grid sites from 100kW to 10MW. It scales from a single village to an industrial mine. And it has the best economics in nearly every fuel-cost climate.

How the Three Sources Work Together

☀ Solar PV

Provides clean daytime energy. MPPT controllers extract maximum power from panels. Output is variable but predictable.

Role: Primary daytime generation

🔋 Battery Storage

Stores excess solar. Delivers power at night. Smooths solar variability. Provides instant response to load changes.

Role: Time-shift + power quality

🔥 Diesel Generator

Provides bulk power when needed. Charges batteries. Backup for low-solar days. Sized for peak + redundancy.

Role: Bulk power + backup

A Day in the Life of a Hybrid Microgrid

Here’s how the energy flows through a typical sunny day in a 1MW industrial site:

06:00
Sunrise, load pickup. Solar starts producing. Diesel was running overnight—shuts off when battery SoC > 70%.
08:00
Solar ramps up. Solar carries 80% of load. Battery charges from excess. Diesel off.
12:00
Peak solar. 100% solar, possibly curtailing. Battery at 100% SoC. Diesel completely off.
16:00
Solar declining. Solar + battery covers load. Battery SoC gradually drops.
19:00
Sunset. Solar at zero. Battery carries full load. Diesel stays off if SoC > 30%.
22:00+
Low-load night. If battery SoC drops below 30%, diesel starts to support load and recharge battery. Operates 4-6 hours typical.

System Sizing Guidelines

The right sizing depends on load profile, solar resource, and fuel cost. General guidelines:

Load Profile Solar Battery Diesel Diesel Saving
High solar, low load (island resort) 1.5-2× peak load 1-1.5× daily energy 0.3-0.5× peak load 80-90%
24/7 industrial (mine, factory) 0.8-1.2× peak load 0.5-1× daily energy 0.6-0.8× peak load 50-70%
Daytime heavy (construction) 1-1.5× peak load 0.3-0.5× daily energy 0.5-0.7× peak load 40-60%

Why This Configuration Wins

Three-source hybrid systems have emerged as the default for serious off-grid power for good reasons:

  • Fuel savings > 60% in nearly all climates and load profiles
  • Reliability > 99.9% achievable without grid connection
  • Modular expansion as load grows—just add solar panels and battery modules
  • Grid-tie ready if utility power arrives later, integration is straightforward
  • Carbon credit eligible under most certification schemes (Gold Standard, Verra, etc.)
  • Resilient to single-source failure—solar cloudy? Battery covers. Battery low? Diesel runs. Diesel maintenance? Solar+battery carry.
